The Aral Sea is an inland sea in Central Asia. Due to diversion of water for irrigation it is a small fraction of its former size. The Syr Darya Basin is one of the two basins in its watershed. The other is the Amu Darya Basin. These rivers were known in ancient times as the Jaxartes or Yaxartes and the Oxus.
