Saudi Arabia is a kingdom occupying most of the Arabian Peninsula, a desert with extremely limited water supplies, consisting for the most part of a small amount of fossil underground water. Historically, other then modest cities devoted to trade and a few oases, the population was nomadic, in 1961 about 4.2 million. Oil wealth, and urbanization, encouraged growth of the population to 24 million by 2006.[1]
