Map of the Lake Balkhash drainage basin

Lake Balkhash is a large lake in a closed basin in Kazakhstan and China. The lake itself lies in southeastern Kazakhstan. The lake is in crisis due to excessive diversions of water. A conference held in 2007 failed to resolve the problem. Agricultural diversions in the Chinese portion of the basin appear to be the major cause of the crisis.

The lake lies to the east of the deeply troubled Aral Sea in a similar basin.
