Oxidation reduction potential, or ORP, is a measurement of the ability of chemicals, such as chlorine, which have been added to water which contains contaminants, for example the water in a swimming pool, to remove those contaminants. It is measured as an electrical potential. A negative voltage signifies a situation where reductive contaminants are overwhelming oxidizing chemicals. The World Health Organization established a standard of + 650 millivolts for drinking water disinfection in 1972.
