Snow is precipitation occurring in conditions below freezing. In winter snow accumulates and forms a snowpack, particularly at higher elevations providing natural storage of water which as it melts in spring and summer soaks into the ground increasing ground water and stream flow.
If the volume of snow is not cleared by annual melting glaciers will form, and in extreme polar or elevated conditions such as Greenland and Antarctica ice caps.
