The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) are goals established by the United Nations with respect to the basics of life. Expansion of the availability of drinking water and sanitation are two of the goals. Specifically the targets are to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Projections published in 2006 show that while substantial progress has been made toward both goals, unless the rate of change substantially accelerates both targets will be unattained in 2015.
